McLaren Automotive announced on May 27th that the front windscreen of the new supercar "McLaren Elva" will be installed in Europe.
The Elva is a new model in McLaren's top-of-the-line Ultimate Series. It will be a roadster with a two-seater open cockpit. Only 149 units will be produced.
"AAMS", which suppresses the flow of air to the cabin even without a windshield, is not equipped
The Elva is a two-seater with a dedicated carbon fiber chassis and body. Until now, it was set only for vehicles without a front windscreen. The fully open cockpit was chosen to provide unparalleled driving pleasure, both on the road and on the track.
Crews can also wear helmets if desired. However, by devising the design of the upper part of the cabin, we are pursuing safety that envelops the driver and passengers.
Elva adopted the world's first active air management system "AAMS". In this system, air taken in from the front nose exits the clamshell in front of the occupants and is channeled over the cockpit and back. It also has carbon fiber deflectors that move up and down. When AAMS is activated, the deflector rises 150mm at the edge of the bonnet outlet to create a low pressure zone.
◆Weight is 20kg more than the car without front windscreen
On the other hand, the front windscreen-equipped vehicle announced this time is designed for customers who prefer a windscreen rather than the air barrier that AAMS provides. It also aims to meet legal requirements in some US states.
Even with the front windscreen, the Elva retains the spirit and performance of the original model, without the roof, side windows or rear screen. The screenless Elva was McLaren Automotive's lightest road car ever. Vehicles with a front windscreen do not have AAMS. Rain-sensing wipers, washer jets, sun visors and glass heaters have been added, adding 20kg to the weight.
Even with a front windscreen, the low front nose and raised front fenders ensure forward visibility. A large carbon fiber rear fender flows from the door to the rear deck. By adopting a retractable rollover protection system, the height of the rear twin buttresses is minimized.
◆ 0-100km/h acceleration performance of 3 seconds or less remains unchanged
No change in performance. The midship is equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 gasoline twin-turbo engine. This engine is based on the Senna. However, the maximum output was increased by 15ps from 800ps to 815ps. Maximum torque remains unchanged at 81.6kgm. The transmission is a 7-speed dual-clutch combination.
In addition, the carbon fiber chassis called "M1A" is extremely light at 551kg. As a result, the power performance is 0-100km/h acceleration in 3 seconds or less, and 0-200km/h acceleration in 6.7 seconds, making it one of the best in the world.
The rear is equipped with an active rear spoiler. Height and angle can be adjusted to optimize aerodynamic balance. The air brake function contributes to braking from high speed driving. The diffuser works in conjunction with the active rear spoiler. The underfloor was designed to be completely flat. The diffuser has a vertical fence that guides the airflow without narrowing the exhaust pipe. Combined with the rear bumper side extensions, it further improves aerodynamic efficiency.
